Chapter 5: Planning Time with Shade/Mark/Check

The lessons in this chapter introduce students to an hourly planning method called Shade/Mark/Check. Students will learn to independently draw the volume of time they have available for a task on an analog clock and to identify and mark the time they will need to include in order to successfully set up and close out that task. They will learn to self-monitor their progress during their work time by planning a Midpoint Check-In,  halfway through this time, to help them assess whether they are still focused on the task and whether they may need to increase their pace or remove distractions in order complete their work on time.

CHapter description

Lesson 18: Understanding Fixed Versus Flexible Time

Students identify tasks that are fixed, flexible, or fixed-but-flexible in a variety of scenarios to better understand how these types of time show up in their day. Students use this awareness to learn how to prioritize tasks and develop strategies that support increased focus.

Lesson 19:
Shade/Mark/Check Overview

Students create a Shade/Mark/Check Flip Book to guide them in independently using the planning steps introduced in the lesson. This flip book includes key terms—like Midpoint Check-In, Space Markers, and Time Robbers—that students will explore in upcoming lessons. If preferred, students have the option to use a one-page version of the tool by photocopying the Time Planning Guide included at the end of the activity.

Lesson 20: The Midpoint Check-In

Students practice using the Midpoint Check-In to help plan and manage their work time more effectively. They mark Midpoint Check-Ins and apply guiding questions to student scenarios to build understanding of how to use this strategy in their own tasks.

Lesson 21: Get Done

Students practice closing out tasks in a variety of student scenarios. This helps them become more comfortable using the Get Done time marker in their own work, so they can successfully complete tasks, close out assignments, and prepare for what’s next.

Lesson 22: Creating Space Markers

Students learn how to use time and space markers together to plan, self-monitor, and adjust their time and pace when working on academic assignments.
