Chapter 2: Making Time Visible

Before we can help students manage their time, they need to really understand what time looks and feels like in their daily lives. In this part of our work, we guide students to build a strong sense of time by helping them visualize how time moves and how they move through it. Using tools like an analog clock, students learn to "see" blocks of time, connect those time chunks to real-life tasks, and imagine their future selves in action. It's all about making time feel more real—and manageable.

Lesson 2: Visualizing Analog Time

In this activity, students explore how analog clocks can actually make it easier to plan and manage time. Unlike digital clocks, which just show the time right now, analog clocks help students see how much time they have and how it’s passing. They’ll use real-life scenarios to practice visualizing time, setting a pace, and staying on track.

Lesson 3: Visualizing Time as a Volume

In this lesson, students learn to visualize the amount or volume of time a task will take to complete. This is a key skill for mentally planning how to use time to reach a goal. Whether it’s getting ready for school or finishing a class assignment, students start to see time as a volume—helping them plan better and feel more confident getting things done within the time they have.

Lesson 4: Visualizing Time for Your Daily Activities

In this lesson, students learn to visualize how much time their daily activities actually take. A lot of people overestimate or underestimate this, which can lead to feeling disorganized. By practicing this skill, students get better at planning and managing their time more accurately and effectively.

Lesson 5: Visualizing and Feeling the Passage of Time

In this lesson, students continue to develop their abilities to visualize time by picturing increments of time on a clock face without numbers. This will encourage them to truly see the time (vs. doing a mental math equation).

Lesson 6: Pies of Time Bingo

Bingo game activities that help students practice picturing slices of time in three formats: when they see a digital time, hear or read a specific number of minutes, and when they imagine real-life situations.

Lesson 7: Visualizing Yourself in Time

In this activity, students learn to visualize themselves in the future—at a specific time and place. This skill helps them better understand the passage of time and plan the steps needed to complete a task.

Lesson 8: Visualizing Yourself Across the Day

In this activity, students practice visualizing time and imagining themselves moving through the key events of their day. By focusing on both the order and duration of daily activities, they build the ability to plan beyond just the next task—helping them feel more prepared, organized, and in control of their time.
